Medical Students

Indiana University School of Medicine Student Chapter

The IUSM Medical Student Council recently approved our student chapter of the CMA as an official Student Interest Group. Our purpose is threefold:

  1. To be a place of professional and social networking.
  2. To provide the opportunity for professional, ethical, and spiritual formation to interested medical students.
  3. To create a forum for dialogue concerning the practice of medicine and Catholic tradition.

We invite and welcome everyone to join in our regular meetings, socials, and service events. We aim to host one talk per semester on a subject of interest to all medical students. Previous talks include "The Mission of Healthcare." by Dr. Chuck Dietzen and a talk on ethics in patient/physician interactions by Dr. Richard Gunderman.

We strive to build camaraderie with CMA students at Marian University School of Medicine by attending Mass together and holding joint social events after Mass.

Marian University School of Medicine Student Chapter

Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine opened its doors to the Inaugural Class in 2013. MU-COM has a special Franciscan Heritage and is one of only five medical schools located on a Catholic Campus. The mission statement of our chapter is:

“To support and empower students of medicine and other health professions in their formation as Catholic health care providers. As an integral part of the CMA, students have the opportunity to work with members of the CMA, both on local and national levels, who can provide guidance and mentoring for students through the challenges of being a Catholic and living out this calling.”

Our past events have included a Palliative Care Physician Panel, a lecture series on Dignitas Personae, a Fertility Awareness workshop with the FACTS organization, and various Bioethics Discussions lead by our campus ethicist, Dr. Jason Eberl. We also participate in Indy Catholic events and monthly volunteering with Operation Leftover. All of our events focus on the Catholic perspective, but individuals from all faith backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Thanks to all who attended our student mixer on October 20 hosted by Father McCarthy! We had a great turnout and fellowship along with discussion of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy and how these play a role in our lives as students and healthcare professionals. We look forward to partnering with students as well as healthcare workers in different professions including nursing, pharmacy and beyond to diversify our organization and increase its impact. Please consider attending an upcoming meeting!
