The White Mass

A celebration of Catholic physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

The tradition of celebrating an annual Red Mass in the Catholic Church for judges, attorneys, law professors, students and government officials originates in Europe and dates back many centuries. In the United States, this liturgical custom has led to annual Masses for two other occupations: the Blue Mass for police officers and others engaged in public safety, and the White Mass for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

The White Mass, named for the white coats of the physicians, is typically celebrated on the Feast of St. Luke, the patron saint of physicians. These Masses honor all those who work in health care, from nurses and physicians to other healthcare professionals. White Masses are not just for Catholics; healthcare workers from all faiths are welcome.

We celebrate the Indianapolis White Mass on the Feast of our patron, St. Raphael, on September 29, the Feast of the Archangels: Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.
